Fencers may again take part in Foil Grade 1 certification at a cost of £5.00 per participant. Each fencer who meets the criteria will be awarded with a British Fencing Association badge and certificate. (Badges are intended to be sewn onto personally owned clothing and not club borrowed kit.)

To pass Grade 1

With a partner, demonstrate:

• • the grip of a foil

• • the salute

• • the en garde (on guard) position, with guards of sixte (cease) and quarte (cart)

• • steps forward (advance) and backward (retreat)

• • the lunge, hitting, direct attack

• • simple parry (block/defence) with direct riposte (attack)

Confidently describe:

• • how to manage your foil safely

• • how to fence safely

• • the target area in foil

• • the principles of fencing with the weapon of foil

• • fencing sporting etiquette
