COMPETITIONS: Ready to take your fencing to the next level?
Entering a competition is a brilliant way to challenge yourself, meet new fencers, and gain experience in a supportive but competitive environment.
Finding Competitions

You can enter many regional and national events online. Here are some helpful links:

The Youth Series – junior-friendly competitions

Leon Paul Junior Series – top UK junior circuit

British Fencing Membership

To enter competitions outside the club, you must hold a valid British Fencing Association (BFA) membership. This includes regional and national events.

  • Membership is annual and includes a unique number you’ll need when registering.

  • Apply or renew online at the BFA membership page.

What to Expect at a Competition

Most events begin early and run throughout the day. You’ll need to:

  • Arrive on time and check in (or risk disqualification with no refund)

  • Take part in poules (group matches, first to 5 hits in 3 minutes)

  • Progress to Direct Elimination rounds (D.E.) if you qualify

  • Win D.E. matches by scoring 15 hits (or 10 for younger age groups) in up to 9 minutes

Competitions often provide:

  • Changing rooms and showers

  • Café or snack bars (though we recommend bringing food and plenty of water)

Expect downtime between rounds while results are processed. Rankings are usually posted on venue walls so you can track progress.

Prizes are typically awarded for 1st (Gold), 2nd (Silver), and 3rd (Bronze). Larger events may offer kit, weapons, or even cash prizes.

For a full breakdown of rules and scoring, visit the British Fencing rules page.

What Kit You’ll Need

Competition kit rules are stricter than club nights. You must wear:

  • Breeches (three-quarter trousers) and long socks

  • Plastron (under-arm protector)

  • 350N or 800N Mask with bib + mask wire

  • At least one spare weapon and bodywire (in case of failure during testing)

Ask a coach
if you’re unsure about what kit meets the correct standards — we’re happy to advise.

Need gear? We can help you source safe, competition-approved kit or even loan some basics if available
